Bai Shao (White Peony). Its scientific name is Radix Paeoniae Alba. It is bitter in flavor and slightly cold in nature. As per TCM definition it covers meridians of the Liver and the Spleen. It is a major herb for all pathological patterns of the Liver, including deficiency of Liver yin and blood, and Liver yang rising. It nourishes Liver blood and preserves Liver yin, calms Liver yang and clears Liver fire; It is an extremely effective tonic herb and is used to purify the blood which in turn cleanses the skin; Bai Shao is also used to relax menstrual cramps and ease pain.
